Artist’s Statement:
If it is true that our body is a vessel then we are repositories for all that happens on Earth. We are witnesses and I am a printmaker who believes that art changes our perception and that I am its messenger. So I begin with storms and maelstroms of wind and air and translate these swirling twisting tornadoes into the human body. It is now a skeleton and it engages our ideas of the inner workings of our bodies. The fires burning and smoke collecting inside our bodies is directly related to air and water pollution effecting our breathing due to the climate crisis. This body of work brings an awareness to the current climate crisis and its direct effects on us all. These monoprints recognize and raise the alarm about the climate crisis as its driving force as the storm engages the air and water and whips it into a complete message of dire circumstances. Some of the prints show a water line or flood line or indicate the upper and lower torso of the body. Other prints are the skeleton of the body trying to process the chemicals in the air. My process is based on a non-toxic, chemical free commitment to safe artmaking. I have been teaching this to students since 1980 and continue to promote a healthy studio experience wherever I work.
